Brief Bio:

Dr. Jyoti Bachani is at present associated with the Saint Mary's College of California as an Assistant Prof. where she teaches courses in strategy, management of technology and innovation and leadership, using case-based methods. Dr. Bachani earned her Bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Delhi, her Master's in management science from Stanford University. She recieved her Ph.D. from the London Business School. She has previously taught at the University of Redlands, San Francisco State and Virginia Tech Universities. She also has several years experience as a strategy consultant to Fortune 200 companies, working for Strategic Decisions Group. She has authored, published and reviewed several cases, and has presented her case based research at the Academy of Management, North American Case Research Association (NACRA), Eastern and Western Casewriters Associations, and other conferences. She is a past President of the Western Casewriters Association, having served previously as the President (2009) and Program Chair (2008), responsible for the Western Casewriters Conference. She currently serves on the board of NACRA as the regional representative for the Western region, and has been an active member of NACRA since 2006. Dr. Bachani's Fulbright-Nehru research is titled as "Understanding 'Jugaad':? A way to innovate, or not?" The April 2010 cover story in the Economist declares India and China to be the new masters of management and describes an Indian national tradition called 'jugaad', where ordinary Indians solve seemingly insoluble problems by making do with whatever they have and never giving up. Jugaad is a Hindi word translated as, 'frugal innovation', 'creative improvisation', and 'breaking and bending of the rules to get the job done'. As a fulbright fellow she will be undertaking fieldwork in the Indian companies where she will observe, understand and document the way of Indian management, in order to develop pedagogical case-studies.
