Dr. Bachani's Fulbright-Nehru research is titled as "Understanding 'Jugaad':? A way to innovate, or not?" The April 2010 cover story in the Economist declares India and China to be the new masters of management and describes an Indian national tradition called 'jugaad', where ordinary Indians solve seemingly insoluble problems by making do with whatever they have and never giving up. Jugaad is a Hindi word translated as, 'frugal innovation', 'creative improvisation', and 'breaking and bending of the rules to get the job done'. As a fulbright fellow she will be undertaking fieldwork in the Indian companies where she will observe, understand and document the way of Indian management, in order to develop pedagogical case-studies.
